‘In The Belly Of The Beast’

‘In The Belly of The Beast’ performed live at The Lab 18/08/23

An intergalactic beast has become trapped in the wires and mechanisms of a music venue. It is expressed through the equipment and the room itself… read more

Using audio, visual and artificial intelligence as sensory inputs, the beast can respond and react to an audience as they interact with its environment.

A collaboration between Miles Dunne and myself featuring Robert Rowland as our Intergalactic Zoologist.

ITBOTB is essentially a giant modular synthesizer being controlled by movement, Chat GPT and audio reactivity. Miles programmed the visuals in response to the audio components.

Chat GPT generated melodies and chords based on different audio analysis inputs. All audio was generated within Touchdesigner using oscillators and processing.

We used VR to preview the installation allowing Miles and Robert to immerse themselves within the world and test the interactive components.

ROCKAMORA

https://www.ace.gallery/whats-on/exhibitions/rockamora

A giant mechanical puppet by artist Kaspar Schmidt Mumm for ACE 2023 Porter Street Commission… read more

Created by a team of artists, performers, technicians, musicians and designers, Rockamora is an interactive installation that responds to participants in the vein of a Tamagotchi or video game pet.

I coded the interactive system, interfacing with an array of sensors and mechanical components to bring Rockamora to life.

Opening night involved a performance by Slowmango and The Bait Fridge, Rockamora is able to be puppeted by a live operator.

The Jungle Giants – ‘Trippin Up’

A music video recorded using volumetric 3D data, processed in Touchdesigner. Created in collaboration with Pollen Arts Club. read more

Front-person Sam was recorded using a Kinect v2 3D camera and custom volumetric capture module researched and designed for the project.

Data was processed and rendered entirely within Touchdesigner.

Digital components were synced to audio inputs for reactive feedback.

During the editing process visuals were recorded through a CRT TV and re-aligned over the digital footage to give texture and character. CRT distortion was also used for scene transitions.

Using consumer hardware we were able to create a high quality digital output while staying nimble to the needs of the client. Scenes could be adjusted in real-time (not pre-rendered) and the client could be collaborated with over an internet screen share.

Historically this type of content would require high production budgets and a large team of creatives (House of Cards by Radiohead).

By utilizing cutting-edge advances in GPU hardware and 3D sensors, we could create content at a fraction of the cost and time that would otherwise be required.

The techniques and tools developed for this project have been put to use elsewhere and continue to enhance my production workflow, having been adapted for the newer Kinect Azure 3D camera.

I’ve always wanted to have a video shown on RAGE!

ATM001, Artofficial Truth Machine

A talking vending machine that dispenses rare seeds and AI generated art based on user conversations… read more

ATM001 has been presented at South By Southwest Sydney, Lot Fourteen and Rundle Mall.

Led by Dave Court and James Brown with support from The Australian Institute for Machine Learning.

I coded the interactivity using python scripts embedded into a rather complex touchdesigner project spanning 3 instances and many virtual environments.

Since then ATM001 has received a few upgrades and now runs on GPT4, writes poems and has many personalities for the user to discover!

I had a lot of assistance from collaborator and python legend Shaun Goudy.

COALESCE – Motez X Dave Court

Coalesce is a collaborative audio visual project by Dave Court and Motez. I lead the virtual production component of the music videos… read more

Using a Kinect Azure and Oculus Quest 2 I created a system for live camera tracking and volumetric recording which was used to capture performances and intergrate them into the music videos by Dave.

Womb

‘Womb’ by Sam Hall with Lily Potger, Jesse Burdell, Tom Kitney, and Jacinta Way. read more

I created the visual world in response to Sam and Lily’s choreography. A ritual of birth, life, and death. Visuals were linked to the lighting and controlled using Q-Lab.

Transient States

‘Transient States’ was a collaboration between the Australian String Quartet, Orlando Mee and Myself. read more

In collaboration with Orlando and the musicians, we created animated, realtime and reactive backgrounds that responded to the compositions performed by the ASQ. I utilised AI image generators, 3D scanning and audio reactivity to build my portion of the show, as well as intergrating content provided by Orlando into the visual landscapes.

Slowmango – ‘Blob Funk’

As a member of the arts collective ‘The Bait Fridge’ I edited the video and created visual effects using AI rotoscoping, 3D animation and compositing.

Making Monsters – Adelaide Festival Center Children’s ArtSpace

Long time collaborator Robert Rowland tests the installation
An interactive installation where users can puppet 3D sculptures and masks. Part of a larger exhibition by AFC and Jess Taylor. read more

I programmed an interactive 3D installation using Touchdesigner that allows users to puppet 3D models created by the artist. This was a challenge as it needed to be responsive, video game-esque, and suitable for fast-moving children.

Kill Climate Deniers – Kinetic Collective

A theatre show with projection-mapped sets, live green screen, and multimedia elements. read more

I was responsible for visual assets created in collaboration and under the guidance of Dave Court.

I programmed a scene changer that allowed for live control of visual assets, projection mapped to the stage and side walls.

We used a mixture of interactive technologies such as live video streaming and reactive visuals.

Greazer Wood – ‘Breath In Breath Out’

Visual FX and rotoscoped AI animation.

Horror My Friend – ‘Spiral Staircase’

3D point clouds scans processed and re-lit and animated in Blender.

Coopers 160 Year Gala

Motion graphics and realtime visual art displayed in the historic Grand Masons Hall for Coopers Brewery. read more

Utilizing graphic design assets and historical TV commercials, I created visual art pieces to be displayed on LED screens at the Masonic Grand Hall in Adelaide.

Content was displayed real-time using TouchDesigner.

This allowed for a dynamic and evolving visual landscape that complemented dinner, speeches, and a band.

Adelaide Festival Plaza – Interactive Visual Art

Interactive Visual Art created with Dave Court and Miles Dunne for Adelaide Riverbank and Renewal SA. read more

User input was captured using a web camera, and visual works responded with animation and generative reactivity. Audiences could interact with the art by moving their bodies and gesturing at the LED screens.

Computer Vision

Created with Robert Rowland. Computer Vision is a 20 minute Audio Visual Installation created using A.I Art techniques and sound tracked with Analogue Synthesizers.

Screened at The Lab, Adelaide as part of Immerse Festival – 2021

RATVISION by The Rats

“Ratvision is an interactive video art installation combining the works of several artists from The Lab Rats. Using projection mapping, 3D modelling, and artificial intelligence, the installation brings to life these works exploring how our perception of reality is shaped by technology.”

Created with Fraz, Clara, Miles, Shaun and Orlando
