I’ve relocated to Naarm and I am slowly setting up my new space. Things are at a bit of a slowdown due to the relocation. I’m going to utilise my free time by working on my portfolio and executing some RnD ideas I have been playing with.
Game of Life simulations
I have been reading up on Game of Life algorithms and Genetic Algorithms as a way of exploring some of the ideas I have been reading about relating to posthumanism.
In the above video, I have used NUMPY arrays, which convert pixels into an array that can be used to calculate complex mathematics, to create a game of life system where RED, GREEN and BLUE pixels react based on a ruleset that determines the length of life, reproduction conditions, death, conflict between pixels etc. The result is a self-sustaining system where Red pixels eat Blue pixels eat Green pixels.
My goal is to utilise this ecosystem as a tool to train an AI mediator which has the goal of managing the population of the pixels on some yet to be determined ruleset (food, life/death conditions). My theory is that I can create some interesting complex systems by creating inputs from real life, which can be controlled by the AI mediator. For example an interactive installation where user inputs effect the Simulation, where the AI mediator alters the user input conditions with the goal of serving the Simulated environment.
I’m still finding the right words for this idea but it is very influenced by Posthumanism. Searching for the borders between organic and techno and the interesting feedback loops that can happen on this border.
Other stuff
Here are some renders from a performance I created visuals for at The Studio in Adelaide. It was made from displacing 32bit gradients to create complex patterns and shapes.

I’m still plugging away at ‘Posthuman Feminism’ by Rosi Bradotti.
